Rainy and sunny periods followed each other in rapid succession today, and as a consequence, we had rainbows twice. The first one formed at quite high sun elevation, so the rainbow lay relatively low in the horizon. It was still rather faint when the secondary rainbow appeared, but the really exciting events were coming only afterwards. As the colours of the rainbow were becoming sharper, I realised that the red was doubled in the primary bow, and the two arches got more and more distinct. It was immediatelly evident that the effect was not that of supernumeraries, but it was a very rare twinned rainbow. Such rainbows are still a mystery. The most accepted explanation is that large raindrops become flattened while they are falling, and this is what produces the twinned bows. I was really sorry that the houses on the two sides covered the rainbow and I couldn't take a full photo of it. It was really exciting to watch the twinned rainbow develop. The two arches started approaching each other, then they touched, and after a while all I could see was that the red part of the primary bow was much broader than usual. The images are the originals and their unsharp-masked versions.

Miután az ikerszivárvány eltűnt, megjelentek a számfeletti ívek is, melyek nagyon élesen látszottak. A következő képek eredetiek, nincsenek kikontrasztolva.
After the twinned rainbow had disappeared, the supernumeraries formed. They were very clear. The following pictures are not enhanced at all.
