NLC "vihar" - NLC "Storm"

Had I known what dawn would bring, I wouldn't have posted yesterday's faint NLCs in the blog. I was woken up by Alex's phonecall at around 3 a.m., and as I have practically no view to the north and northeast, I fastened my camera on its tripod and stuck it horizontally out of my bathroom's window to stretch my arms with a further 150 cm, and to see whether I could observe anything. Well, it was really worth getting out of bed: the blurred electric blue spot in the corner of my photo indicated that there's more to see behind the houses. If I want to get a really good view, I have to go outside my town, but I did not get my bike this time, as I was too afraid that the NLCs would disappear by the time I arrive at the meadow. Therefore all my photos have disturbing poles, electric lines, buildings and trees, and there's no full panorama picture at all, although the clouds spread to about 100-120 degrees. It was an unforgettable sight.

It was outstanding display! I read a lot of Polish reports. According to one of them NLC could have been observed about 70-80 degrees above the south horizon! Your photos are interesting to compare the difference between NLC displays in Hungary and in Poland connected with the change of the latitude. For example last night Polish display (before midnight) was more similar to your NLC storm and our display before dawn was more bright and bigger than your (as I mentioned at the beginning).

You should have taken the risk. I guess the panoramic view would have been awesome.

Thanks Jakub. I'll have a look at the Polish pictures in SpaceWeather.
Marko, I know. In such situations I just cannot act. I started considering that getting the key for my bike-shed and getting the bike out would be 5 mins. I had already wasted a lot of time dressing up and considering whether to go out or not. Then the bike ride is another 15 minutes. Next time I'll be wiser... Follow the link in my text to Alexandra's photos, then you'll see what the panorama was like. At least an almost complete panorama. SpaceWeather NLC gallery has other Hungarian photos.
